Kripke added that, "Sam's story, we really refer to it as the metaphor of an ex-addict trying to re-integrate into his family. And when you're in that real life situation, it's brutal, because you're met with temptation daily. He's basically an ex-heroin addict surrounded by walking, talking heroin, all day. And he's trying to resist, and he doesn't have the support of his family, because they're hurt and they're angry and they don't trust him. And that becomes a real, bittersweet and ultimately heroic journey to still stay strong no matter what and keep overcoming that. But on Dean's side, Dean is not entirely without blame here and he has to learn also how to break the old patterns himself and not treat Sam like a freak and not treat Sam like a littlewow gold brother. We've torn down their relationship and now we're going to rebuild it, block by block with missteps and detours and to wring as much pain out of it as possible. But I think by the end of the season, they're going to be back together and stronger than ever."
From the beginning, Kripke had said he had a five year plan for Supernatural, which makes this a very interesting season. In previous years, Supernatural's renewal often came at the last minute, but with the ratings solid, CW actually picked up Season 5 quite early this year, and have not ruled out ordering a Season 6 – which of course begs the question of what the producers would do with a sixth season. Said Gamble, "I have always felt like there's a really solid, repeatable franchise to the show. I am curious about what happens after this season. I'll tell you this – we're not pulling our punches this season. We have a big, apocalyptic story and we're bringing in archangels and Lucifer and we did make the decision that we weren't going to hold anything back."
Asked what he felt about the possibility of continuing the show past Season 5, Kripke replied, "Because I have low self-esteem, I never dreamt the show would go five years. And so I had a five year plan, and now I'm here in the fifth season and it's doing well and I'm like the girl with glasses in the teen comedy. Everyone wants to go into a sixth season and I was a little bewildered by it. So the reality is I do have a five-year plan and we are going to finish this story this year. We're not going to drag it out, to stretch it, to accommodate and dilute it and weaken it. So this chapter might be over, but there's absolutely nothing saying a new chapter can't begin. And we're leaving that open for a new story and we'll cross that bridge when we get to it."
